Picture this:
You’re 5 months pregnant and like many first time moms, you’re overly obsessive about your surroundings and what you put in your body. One Saturday, your hubby decides he’s going to re-caulk the shower. No big deal right?! In the process, he finds black mold. EVERYWHERE in the shower that you’ve been showering in for the last 5 months. Enter, hormonal pregnancy freak out.
This moment was our first unexpected project as homeowners…one of those, “welcome to owning a home” moments. Like many projects in an older house, this project started as something small and turned into something much bigger. What started as re-caulking tub turned into replacing the whole shower.
Oddly enough, we didn’t do too many DIY or Fixer Upper projects in our first house. The only thing we tackled was replacing the garage roof. However, in our second house, we tackled more projects. You can see more about your house journey here.
Before
Here is a before picture of the bathroom. Not the worse but also not beautiful. *Side note: please forgive the not so pretty photos. This happened long before I decided to blog our journey.
Mold Removal
After taking out the tile and removing the mold, water-resistant drywall was put in. Lucky for me, my cousins lived nearby so I was able to escape the home for the mold removal. The hubby made sure he wore a mask and gloves while disposing of the mold.
We choose to forego putting a new tile surround in to reduce the chance of future mold. A simple shower surround was installed instead.
Since we were doing some work in the bathroom, we decided to replace the floors as well. It was a purchase on the whim while we were purchasing the shower surround. We choose simple and went with a peel and stick vinyl.
After
As you can see we didn’t do a total remodel since there was a baby on the way. But it was a great improvement.
